That night, the first that the three men planning to rob the Katy Flyer were to spend in the tumbledown shack next to the railroad line, was not an agreeable one for any of the parties concerned in the endeavour. Red Halliday and his cousin got on well enough in each other’s company, but neither cared unduly for Tom Jackson. He, for his part, had only persuaded the other two men to join in the robbery because time was short and he didn’t know where else to turn. These men would not have been his first choice for partners in such a business, not by a long chalk.

‘What’re you boys aimin’ for to do with the cash we look to make from this?’ asked Jackson, more to make conversation than because he really wanted to know.

‘What’s it to you?’ replied Jake Flint. ‘Nobody asked you ’bout your plans. It’s enough that we’ll do what’s needful.’

‘Hey, I didn’t mean nothing,’ said Jackson, ‘just talking, you know?’

‘Well then, don’t,’ said Halliday. ‘To speak plain, we ain’t precisely bosom friends and the only thing we got in common is wantin’ four thousand dollarsfor a half hour’s work.’

Tom Jackson was at first disposed to be affronted at being treated so disdainfully, but he soon recollected that he had given Halliday and that vicious cousin of his all the necessary information about the proposed robbery. He felt a creeping sensation of unease and a realization that those two men could just as well make an end to him and carry out the attack on the train by their own selves. It would not profit him a whit if he lost his life as a consequence of this scheme. So it was that he subsided and said nothing. An uneasy silence fell and all three men just lounged there smoking and staring out across the hills. Tom Jackson could not recall when last he had spent a more uncomfortable evening.
